Welcome To The World Of CSS Web Design

Although CSS was first introduced in the mid 1990s, it did not become a mainstream tool among web designers and masters until more recent years. This is unfortunate, because there are millions of poorly designed web sites cluttering the internet that could be easily improved with the help of CSS.

So what exactly is CSS? CSS is an acronym that stands for Cascading Style Sheets. The term Cascading Style Sheets implies two things. First off, the style sheets are cascading. This means that multiple style sheets can be used for a single web page.

Additionally, the term “cascading” also refers to the way a style is determined in the event that more than one rule matches a single element. The second thing that is implied by the name Cascading Style Sheets is that the purpose of CSS is to style web pages. Whereas the purpose of HTML (or XHTML) is to define the structure of a web page, the purpose of CSS is to define the presentation.

The reason that so many web pages have broken layouts in different browsers is because they try to use HTML to control the structure and presentation of the page. The most common abuse of HTML is attempting to use tables as a presentation method. Although you may be able to achieve the look you want in a single browser, your web page will look broken and distorted in many other browsers.

The only time that tables should be used is to hold a set of data (such as the results from a scientific experiment). If you do have a legitimate use for tables on your web page, you can even use CSS to style your table and make it more attractive.

By taking the time to learn CSS, you will be able to create a web page that looks much more consistent across a variety of browsers.

What is a web designer anyway?

As a web designer, I get all kinds of requests , for information other than web design, and as a web designer I'm not suppose to really to be able to do things outside of the web design area. I believe there are a few misconceptions about what exactly a web designer does. In this article I am going to nail down exactly what a web designer is and what they should be able to do. This article pertains to small business website designers and not to bigger businesses where they are looking for someone who specializes. First I'll touch of the differences between a web designer and a web developer. A web designer is someone who creates the visual design and layout of a web page. A web developer is someone who does the behind-the-scenes programming of a website. For example a web developer creates the code for database websites.

Web designer's definition:

They give business organizations a web presence by building them a website. Web designers are professionals who organize information, create page layouts, while communicating the business's information/opinions in a website. Web designer's create another medium for the business to expand into. Creating a website enables the business to attract new customers, showcase its services products, and to do business across countries (as opposed to one location).

What things do web designer's do?

That's a really good question. It is definitely hard to nail down what every designer must do in order to call themselves a web designer. A good web designer should be able to do both the design and the development, unfortunately for you the consumer it doesn't always work that way.

Your web designer must be able to perform the following:

::Understand and keep current will all new emerging technology
:: Layout web pages with HTML, XHTML, XML , and other programming languages
:: Program HTML (hand code), JavaScript and CSS
:: Translate your ideas, needs and expectations into a web page.
:: Design navigation elements (such as navigation bars)
::Create graphics in Photoshop or any other professional imaging software
:: Effectively participate in a web development team
:: Have an understanding on how to create Flash (authoring software used to create animation programs)
:: Understand and implement web standards
:: Have an understanding of Search Engine Optimization
:: Have a basic understanding of typography, graphics and color theory
:: Understand needs of users and of usability testing
:: Have ability to analyze a target market
:: Understanding of cross browser problems and how to fix them

A great web designer also has knowledge of coding languages such as:

:: C++
:: Python
:: Java
:: JavaScript
:: Cold fusion
:: SQL
:: PHP

Sometimes it might be difficult for a web designer to have all those different programming languages under their belt. It is like knowing English, French, Chinese and German. Quite complicated. The more languages they know the better. Well that should help you on your search for a good web designer!

Web designing is a huge canvass especially made for designers.

Web site development services open great doors of opportunity. As time passes, new services are discovered. These services are opened to both designers and the public. They greatly contribute to the growth of e-commerce and marketing.

Web designing is a huge canvass especially made for designers. It takes artistic passion and outstanding diligence to come up with one superb web design.
What therefore is superb web design? Simply, it is a web design tat catches the attention of the target visitors. Nonetheless, it does not stop there. It lingers in a way that visitors keep coming for more.
A superb web design is both excellent in form and function. Form delves into the aesthetic side of the wed site. Principles of art and the innate skill of the designer are the keys to achieve its excellence.
On the other hand, function is the meat of the web site. Every visitor has his or her own purpose in visiting your page. Usually, the reason is to research or to be acquainted with your products and services. Function must be complete and fulfilling. If there is information that needs to be divulged, say it. But the more powerful way to say it is by touching the heart through persuasion.

To be specific, here are some of the rules of thumb in web design:

1. Do not center everything. The same will just result to a scattered and disorganized look. Try to maximize space. It is there to serve a function. Do not overlook that function.

2. Applying contrast can be your designing edge. Contrast can be applied with color, size, value and weight of an image. Contrast has something to do with the clearness, brightness and volume of an image, logo or graphics.

3. Sections must be separated. The contents must be easy to read. To distinguish one section from the other, you can use thin line, borders or light colors. Another option is to use blank ‘buffer zones’ which is somewhat similar to the concept of borders the only difference is that invisible lines are made to separate the parts of a page.

4. To make your page functional, make certain that the information is tight and full. Proofread, edit and edit more.
Excellent form plus function makes an excellent web site.
