The Three Card Trick of Internet Marketing - Traffic, Adsense, Money
There are not many things in the Internet Marketing world that you can wholly rely on. Following the advice of the 'experts' does not always yield success. In my experience though, there is one area of Internet business that can pretty reliably deliver results. And that is 'Traffic, Adsense, Money'. In other words, if you send traffic to a site with AdSense on it, you will get paid! The good bit is that you will get paid by Google, which means that the income source is reliable. There is no waiting for payments, and no panicking if the provider will go bust before they send you your money.
Google have some simple rules which you must follow, but otherwise, you can pretty much count on receiving regular payments from Google if you adhere to the three card trick. Sending traffic to a site is not always straight forward, but there are many ways in which this can be achieved, although this is something outside the scope of this article.
What we want to discuss here, assumes that some traffic is coming to your site, and you have AdSense already established. We want to look at the 'money' element of the equation.
Whilst getting traffic to your site is a major part of the Internet Marketing exercise, it is not enough by itself. Undoubtedly, when you receive traffic to a web site with AdSense on it, you will get some people clicking on Ads, and you will receive some income. However, for every dollar you make on each web site, you could be losing another four or five. Let's read that again, For Every Dollar You Make, You Could Be Losing Four Or Five.
When I started creating web sites a few years ago, I discovered AdSense, created an account, threw some code onto my sites and left it. Not surprisingly, nothing happened, and I forgot about it, and went onto other things. Imagine my surprise when about two years later, I received a cheque from Google for just over $100. I couldn't believe it. So, the first thing I did was to look at my AdSense account and see why they paid me. I also checked my web logs and lo noticed that traffic has appeared over a period of time, and yes, people had clicked on my AdSense ads. However, I was hungry for more information. After all, if I could do this without paying attention, imagine what would happen if I tried to replicate it. I started doing the math, and multiplying my results by the number of web sites I was going to put up. I could see dollar signs in front of my eyes, and was on my way to the travel agent, when it hit me.
One thing was for sure. Web sites take time to attract traffic as a rule, and by doing nothing to promote my sites, I got some results, but it took a couple of years. So, we come to a rule
* There may be ways to speed things up, but you have to be patient. And while we are at it, we can create another rule
* Track your results Now, Google does offer some tools to track your web sites, but to my mind they are limited and cumbersome . They certainly didn't give me many clues as to how and why I received my cheque from Google I wasn't able to tell anything other than which sites has produced the income. Nice to know, but not enough to enable me to replicate my success. So, I had to find another way to track AdSense results. I eventually tracked down an awesome script that did everything bar get up and make a cup of coffee.
This script has everything that you need to monitor your AdSense campaigns. It not only tells you which sites are generating income, but it also tells you which pages on the sites, which Ads on the sites, which colors of which ads on the sites, which keywords were used to find you, which site referred your customer to you need I go on? It is a magnificent tool, and one which is indispensable if you want to succeed with AdSense.
Once I installed the script, I started to see trends in my web sites, and as I built more sites, my AdSense income grew, and I now get regular payments from Google Please note that I am NOT one of those who makes tens of thousands a month with AdSense (I wish), and I still haven't discovered the secret to that level of success. I do, however, continue to monitor my results and to read any information that I can relating to AdSense.
And what did I learn from this tool?
First off, I should point out that the tool is excellent for the beginner, because it takes you through every aspect of setting up an AdSense web site. No stone is left unturned and I am testimony to the fact that it goes beyond beginners as well.
I have implemented some of the strategies outlined on some of my sites, and I have seen improvements in all of them. I would say that my clicks have doubled with the same amount of traffic. I do not have many high traffic sites, and this is where this really wins. It helps you get the most out of your existing traffic, and does not rely on you having to generate more traffic.

Do I Need to be Computer Savvy to Use Google Adsense?
You don’t have to be a techno-geek to use Google Adsense. In fact, you don’t need any more technical knowledge than you do to surf the web. Google Adsense is very user-friendly with a comprehensive support site to answer any question you might have.
You are first walked through the sign-up process where you are prompted for any and all information needed. You will then have a couple of days while you are waiting for your account to be approved. This would be a good time to familiarize yourself with the program policies, which of course you read before you signed up. But look again. Make sure the site you are registering doesn’t have any of the no-nos listed. For instance, some profanity is allowed, but nothing excessive. What is excessive? Google adsense offers various payment options for publishers.
Electronic Funds Transfer (ETF) is offered in 16 countries whereby your payments are deposited directly into your bank account in your local currency. You then click the edit link adjacent to the payment header. After you fill out the bank information, Google Adsense will make a small test deposit into your account. Later that evening my wife asked if I would be willing to go to the shops to buy her some cigarettes. I was quite happy to go as I also needed to buy some for myself. When I arrived at the shop, I asked the shopkeeper for the forty cigarettes and he in return stated how much it would cost. This amount was more than the nine pounds I had made that day on adsense.
Even though I was well aware of how much a packet of cigarettes would cost, this still came as a bit of a shock to me. There I am working very hard in an attempt to increase my adsense earnings and then go about throwing what money I have made down the drain by smoking these fags.
This was enough to give me the inspiration to stop smoking, I am not trying to say it is easy but knowing that over a course of a year I am likely to save around a thousand pounds was a big help to me.
My wife has also been very determined and has managed to quit smoking. We now live in a much healthier environment and can now afford to have a holiday abroad each year.

Adwords, Adsense, SEO – Common Denominator, Keywords
If you have just put up a website, you probably all ready have heard words like: keywords, Google Adwords, Google Adsense, SEO. Adwords, Adsense, SEO have one thing in common – Keywords. How important are keywords? Very Important.

Adwords, be it through Google, Miva, or any pay-per-click search engines, you need keywords. With Adwords, you create a three-line ad – 25 word title, with two 35 word lines of ad copy – then you create your keywords. To get the hits, you have to brainstorm for different keywords, that are different but relevant to your target audience. Sound easy? It’s not. It takes time, patience, constant tweaking, and hoping that the product you are selling is not already saturated -- to much competition, makes it a little more difficult for the novice to make a profit.

Google Adsense is an advertising program created by Google, and which is beginning to be explored by other search engines, such as Yahoo and MSN – that allows you to put targeted ads on your website. If someone clicks on the ad, you earn a small amount of money. These ads are keyword driven and are relevant to your webpage or website.
Sounds simple? Well, not really. There is more too it than just putting an ad on your website and expecting someone to click on it. What’s involved? Let’s see – color, position, style, to name just a few.
Search engine optimization – this for me has been a time-consuming process – since I am still learning. SEO is keyword driven – the search engines pull the keywords from your web copy – not, to my surprise, from the meta keywords tag. Granted, I still use the meta keywords tag, but maybe in the near future, I will slowly eliminate the tag from my webpages. The search engines do, however, pull information from Meta Description, Meta Title, and the content of your webpages. Thus, content does reign supreme.
Since content reigns supreme, each page should contain useful content and most importantly, your most relevant keywords that you want to emphasize. Secondly, it is best to try and base your keywords around a central theme. I have found that when the keywords diverts away from the main theme – that sends a red flag to search engines. Obviously you write articles based on what your site’s content is focused on. 3. AdwordsYes you can combine Adwords and Adsense together and still make a profit. You simply use leverage. Heard of Adwords Arbitrage? You bid for keywords that are low yet you maintain high paying Adsense ads. Is it possible? Yes. Do your research and send only the cheapest possible traffic for search engine bidding. The key here is not to be laser targeted keywords, they can be off a little but they need to be cheap. Another way is to simply set separate content bids for content advertising. Set it very cheaply and it will drive traffic quickly also.

Adsense And Yahoo Their Fight For Advertising Supremacy Is Going On
Two of the biggest names in the Internet are Yahoo and Google. Its no longer surprising that competition will exist between these two giants. When Google has launched its adsense campaign it started dominating the Internet but of course Yahoo will not just let this pass without creating one of their own. If Google has Adsense, Yahoo on its part has created the Yahoo Publisher. But comparing the overall design of the two programs we will see that they are somewhat similar in some respects.
To better understand the two programs it would be best that we discuss them separately.
Google’s Adsense: Let us start with the infamous Adsense Program. This program is an automated ad service that allows small web owners to display advertisements on their own web pages in return they will receive a portion or a share of the pay-per-click revenue that Google will generate out from the Adsense. This is an additional income for web owners. Google’s adsense in one view may seem to be a simple concept but behind it is a complicated technology that only the smartest and the brightest team of Google can effectively accomplished.
The adsense program is wholly automated and makes use of a crawler that assesses the contents found on a publisher’s site. After the evaluation is complete Google will then provide the publisher with some Javascript code to embed in their pages. If ever the Javascript is activated a call is made back to Google to pull some ads out from the adsense program. The ads generated will be in accordance to the content found on the page. For example if the content of the page deals on wheelchairs then all ads regarding wheelchairs will appear. If you want to gain more from adsense it would be best to customize the colors as well as the formats to match the theme of your site.
This will make the adsense appear as if it is an original part of the page. This will lead your site visitors to think that it is a link to one of your site’s pages and would therefore click on it for additional information that they may require.
Yahoo’s Publisher: There are several features that set Yahoo’s Publisher distinct from Google adsense and these are as follows:
1. You will not see the Google’s famous tagline—“Ads by Google”
2. The ad blocks used by Yahoo do not touch each other
3. Another obvious distinction is the text inside a block is cut off and ends in an ellipsis.
These are just some of the prominent features that differentiate Yahoo’s Publisher from Google’s Adsense. But unlike Yahoo, Google requires its advertisers to refrain from using incomplete phrases and to limit the phrases to a certain number of characters per line. In using Yahoo’s Publisher when you click on the ads you are transmitted to the advertiser’s page but you have to pass through first an Overture server. This Overture Server by the way is Yahoo subsidiary or soon to become Yahoo Search. The main function of this server is to do ad serving.

Join me on my AdSense Adventure, I'll be trying different AdSense tips & tricks. This will be a little different than all the other 'get rich quick' guides: instead of telling you what to do I let you watch me try it all...
Let me tell you about my trial and error path trying to make some money with Google AdSense™. I’m sure you’ve seen a lot of websites on this subject already. Many of them tell you how you can make a 6 figure income with only a couple of hours work a week. They will even tell you exactly how to achieve this. Just buy their e-book and you’ll have all the tips and tricks from the pros.
I’m quite skeptical about these offers. Doing my own research on the Google AdSense™ subject, I’ve found quite a few people who paid for the e-book but are very unhappy about it. They all tell me that the information they paid for was very useful, but is also freely available. The great thing about the Internet is that you can find information on any subject for free. It’s not allways easy to find the information you are looking for, but if you know how and where to search you can find almost anything. If you are not very skilled in finding information on the 'net maybe you should just go ahead and buy the e-book but keep in mind that the e-book will be the author's view on the subject. Your own search will give you a better view of the big picture. Of course, finding the information will take some effort and time. To me the search for information is part of the adventure, a part that I don’t want to skip.
So lets get rich with Google AdSense™! Ok, back to reallity: do you really think you can get a 6 figure income from Google AdSense™? I’m sure some people do make a small fortune with AdSense™ but I bet it takes a lot more work then those e-book writers tell you.
I registered with Google AdSense™ back in December 2004. After one year my total earnings had reached $25. Yes I know that is about the price of the amount of beer you drink in one hour at the bar. Still this has been easy money: I don’t think it took me more than 20 minutes to sign up with Google and add the AdSense™ code to my website.
This year will be different: I will try to get some serious income from AdSense™. I’m not expecting a 6 figure income and I’m not giving up my job. My goal is to get a check from Google every month (for those of you who don’t know, Google sends out checks each month to people who have made over $100).

An Adsense - Yahoo Publisher Network Comparison
As more and more people are hosting their own webpage or pages, advertisers have learned how to make contact with the audiences who visit the pages. And not just randomly either; there are now advertising programs that target ads specifically to the site that the person is viewing. They are called contextual advertising programs because they search through the context and content of a page and identify keywords. They return ads to that page that the program believes would be relevant and interesting to the viewer. For example, if you are visiting a website on low fat recipes, you might find ads about low fat products or weight loss products.
Website owners aren’t the only ones using this form of advertising to generate revenue. You’ll see these ads on search engine pages themselves. For example, on Google, the ads appear in a column on the right hand side of the results page. The keywords you enter in the search box are used to target ads to you. Advertisers are hoping that the short ad they supply will lure you to their site, where hopefully you’ll either order their product or use their service.
Website owners can now earn money by allowing contextual advertisers to place ads on their webpages. The more people visit and click the ads, the more money the advertisers will pay to the website owner. Many website owners make a considerable stream of income from these programs. But the ads have to be well targeted in order to get people to click. Which is why right now there is so much excitement about a new contextual advertising program being tested and prepared for the market. Everyone out there making money on contextual advertising is waiting to see if the Yahoo Publisher Network (YPN) product will return better results than the leading Google Adsense product.
At the moment, YPN is still in beta testing. A group of users were invited to trial the product and the reviews on blogs and postings all over the web are somewhat consistent on one aspect. As of now, it seems that YPN is not returning ads that are as relevant as the ones that Adsense users are finding. For example, one blogger reported that on a website on PHP programming, YPN returned ads for a florist and for a phone service provider. The blogger couldn’t understand what words the YPN program picked up for the florist. But it was the word ‘hello’ that apparently signaled the ads regarding the phone service.
Additionally, some users have complained that YPN doesn’t seem to update earnings and visitor information as often as Adsense. So website owners have to wait to learn if changes they have made have actually impacted the visitors that they get. However, although neither program will release payment schemes until you register as a user, it seems that YPN is paying more per click than Adsense. But the feeling is that payments will be made more appealing long enough to get website owners to switch from Adsense to YPN, but then prices will even out. Some argue that in the long run it won’t matter if YPN pays more if they can’t improve their ad relevancy because they won’t get the number of clicks from visitors to see a real difference in their earnings.
As YPN is being tested, they are getting opinions and feedback from the participants. So in time, the service may be improved. However, competition for Adsense is a healthy thing. It will force both companies to continually strive to improve their service and offerings so that webmasters can continue to benefit from a healthy stream of income in the future.
