Web Based Training And Internet Enabled Technology

Just a few years ago, web-based learning through PCs was seen as revolutionary. Companies could put their orientations and ongoing trainings on line and all employees would get standardized learning. Soon, with the spread of wifi, router-based, and satellite wireless networks, people could tap into this type of training while on the run. A salesperson could get trained in the latest marketing presentation while riding on a plane to her or his next destination. Or a person could get oriented to their new job from home before the first day they work.

Now, web-based trainings have taken another step forward due to the technology involved in internet-enabling devices besides computers. There are some obvious examples of how this might work. For example, your TV may be connected to the internet in a way that allows you to tune in to a training or conference as easy as changing to a specific channel. You could use your DVR and truly get the most out of the conference.

There are also less obvious but still valuable examples of the potential of internet enabled devices. For example, an internet enabled printer could tap into web-based trainings in helping you maximize the quality of photographs before printing them. You could learn how to crop, sharpen, lighten, etc. your photos by having an online guide that directs real-time information to a nearby computer. That web-based guide, because the device is internet enabled, can actually “know” what you’ve just done and direct you about whether that was correct or not. If you have an internet-enabled all-in-one device, you could also learn how to scan and fax for maximum results.

There are even some far out, but truly interesting ways this technology could be used. In the kitchen, internet-enabled appliances could actually teach you how to cook as you go, sending information to a nearby monitor about when food is done, or ready for the next step. An internet enabled coffee maker could use web-based training to help you brew perfect coffee that responds in real time to the fineness of the ground beans, the temperature of the water, or the density of the resulting beverage.

In all of these examples, web based learning would take place in real time, and could lead to new skills being developed. And in each example there is also the potential of tapping into live help. In the first example, a guide could catch you up with whatever you’d missed in the conference if you “arrive late”. In the internet enabled printer example, live help could assist you when a document presents particular difficulty – the person on the other end could “see” what is going on in real time. In the third example, a cook could teach people how to cook her or his recipes almost like he or she is there – even checking the temperature and other information from their remote location.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of web based learning and internet enabled technology is the ability for people to do things together even when they are far apart. Literally hundreds of people could be part of a web based conference that helps them learn the latest uses for an internet enabled device. Or, your friend, relative, or teacher who knows how to do something you don’t could provide you with web based learning where they can see and react to your input on an internet-enabled device.

Web Site Development With Ruby On Rails And Other Programs

Web site development is a very big business these days. Almost every company in the world is trying to make their make on the web. However creating a nice looking, functional web site is not very easy to achieve unless you have the right tools to help you.

The need for web development tools has led many different companies to produce very sophisticated programs to help programmers and even non-programmers create and deploy great looking and very functional web sites. Some of the tools available for people to use for web development are Macromedia’s Dreamweaver, Microsoft’s Front Page, Microsoft’s Visual Studio, and Ruby on Rails.

The first two programs are used mostly to design and create visually attractive web sites, but they do not offer great database support. However the last two programs are fully developed web frameworks that allow programmers to create a fully functional web site using one program. Ruby on Rails is the only one of these programs that offers a full version that does not cost a thing. The best thing about Ruby on Rails is that it is open source, so it is constantly being worked on and improved by programmers to make it much better and much easier to use.

Also creating web sites with Visual Studio only allows you to use some of its functions if you deploy on a Windows server, while Ruby on Rails is more tailored to run on a Linux or Unix environment. Ruby on Rails is the only open source web development framework that can offer some of the same functionality that can be found in many of the more expensive software that is available.

Ruby on Rails also allows more agile development than PHP or some other technologies that are available right now. I believe that everyone should look into Ruby on Rails if they do not have a large development budget or they need to rapidly develop a robust web application.

High-Speed Internet Access For Media Sharing

Everyone today loves to share video, pictures and music via the Internet. However, without a reliable, high-speed connection, this is often a frustrating or impossible process. Slow dial-up connections are often interrupted, unavailable, or too slow to provide a timely download or upload of media files.

Satellite Internet connections provide the speed and connectivity required to efficiently share your media, purchase new media, or peruse the latest video blogs online. Popular social networking sites are great development tools for business and personal connections, but are virtually impossible to navigate without the proper grade of Internet connection.

High-speed Internet service allows you to quickly and efficiently download new music or videos directly onto your computer. This saves the time and money required to drive to the nearest store to purchase a hard copy of the material. If you live in a rural area, satellite Internet offers even more money saving potential.

Rural residents find that their longer commute to the nearest town or city is often a lengthy, stressful, and gas consuming process. Having the ability to order items over the Internet directly from home reduces these common complaints.

Often, Internet service is either not available at all or dial-up connection is the only option. Dial-up connections can be very slow and unreliable, and force the user to only use one form of communication at a time.

Many callers may receive a busy signal when you are online using a dial-up connection, or the phone call may kick you off of the Internet entirely. In addition, only one user can generally be online at a time.

If you live in an area where dial-up connections are your only option, satellite Internet may be the answer you've been looking for. Only requiring a clear line of sight to the southern sky, the potential of satellite connections are virtually limitless.

Satellite Internet is totally portable, so you can store and send your media on the go. You may also stay connected while receiving and making phone calls, and are always connected. Additionally, more than one user may be online at once.

Nothing is more frustrating than waiting several minutes, sometimes hours, for large files to travel over a dial-up connection. Satellite Internet providers offer download and upload speeds which far exceed those available with traditional phone line connections.

Sending pictures to several family members from recent gatherings can also be an extremely painful process with a slow connection. Even attaching the pictures or video to an email can result in hours of waiting time!

In order to ensure your precious time is not wasted by waiting on a slow connection, especially if you live in a rural area, high-speed satellite Internet is a must. Providers generally will package your service so that you have access to the speeds you need, and can always be changed.

If you currently have satellite television, you know the amazing advances made in today's world of technology. Taking your home's connectivity to the next level allows for optimal media sharing and downloading with the addition of satellite Internet service.

Internet Presence versus Internet Marketing - How Do They Relate?

I get a lot of questions from people I’m connected to on on-line networking platforms asking what the difference is between Internet Marketing and Internet Presence. This is becoming more important as more people actually care about being found when someone does a name search in Google.

It is one thing to have content on the Internet that you are associated with such as press releases you are quoted in, blog posts you have authored or commented on, articles you’ve published on-line, web pages and websites you’ve created, and similar content others have written about you or that reference your name. It’s another thing if any of that content surfaces to the first page of Google when someone does a search – only – on your name (i.e., they don’t narrow/refine the search criteria by adding additional terms such as your employer or field of expertise etc.). Someone searching on – only – your first and last name should be able to find you on the first page of hits.

It is one thing if your name is so unique that Google only surfaces 968 hits your name. It’s another thing if you have a more common name like John Smith that surfaces 326 – million – hits. Someone with a name like John Smith has a lot more work to do to create a visible (key concept) Internet presence.

That’s where some basic Internet Marketing concepts come into play. Some people call it Search Engine Optimization, but that can have some cryptic technical connotations for those of us that don’t wear propeller hats (having a Physics degree, I used to wear one). I prefer to look at Internet Marketing in a more common sense fashion.

In the context of building a visible Internet presence, Internet Marketing is quite simply – using the Internet to market – you – or more specifically associating Internet content to your name in the eyes of a search engine.

You can have all of the content in the world floating around the Internet, but if no one can find it when they perform relevant key word searches in Google (or any search engine) none of that content is helping you create a visible (there’s that concept again) Internet presence. You can waste a lot of time creating content nobody will ever see if you don’t keep some basic Internet Marketing concepts in mind along the way.

Internet Marketing 101 - When it comes to building and establishing a visible Internet presence, it all starts with one fundamental concept: Your name – is – the key word phrase you are focusing on.

That means you want to have your name in the title of the content you create whenever possible. Ideally, that means you want it to be between the HTML title tags of the webpage that displays your content. It also helps if your name is in the first 150 characters of the content you create as well. Why? Because every search engine grabs a certain part of a document or web page to use as the descriptive text which appears below the actual hyperlinked Title of the hit. Often, but not always, a search engine grabs the first part of your content to use as the descriptive text. If you have a way of actually driving the META TAG “description” associated with the webpage displaying your content – obviously make sure your name is in the first 150 characters of that description. In addition, if you have the ability to select the META TAG “keywords” associated with the webpage displaying your content – obviously make sure your – first and last name – is one of the first 2-3 a keyword phrases you select.

Are you going through a resume writing or on-line bio writing exercise and trying to increase your visibility? Absolutely make sure you take the above basics into account if you are looking to ensure a document so obviously about – you – is going to be found when someone does a search on your name.

So what do you do if someone else is writing the article? Ask them if they would craft the article and associated HTML such that your name appears where it will be beneficial to you and not disruptive to the objective of the content.

What do you do if the content is already published on the Internet? You can create new content containing your – first and last name – hyperlinked to the associated URL of the content that mentions you by name. This is especially useful for women who go through a name change as a result of a change in marital status. Hyperlink your “current” name to content that references your “former” name. Basically you’re building a key word association with your “current” name and the associated webpage containing your “former” name in the search engines.

To accelerate your rise through the search engine noise to the first page of hits, you want to also consider where you are actually creating content. In other words, are you publishing new content on a web site you’ve created, someone else’s website, on sites that not only benefit from a lot of traffic, but also benefit from a lot of constantly changing new content, blog sites, etc.

From an article publishing perspective, EzineArticles is an obvious great example of a site that not only benefits from a lot of traffic, but also benefit from a lot of constantly changing new content.

From an on-line blogging/networking platform perspective Ecademy is an obvious example. Why Ecademy and not LinkedIn? Because LinkedIn does - not - give you the ability to post new content beyond your networking profile. LinkedIn's lack of constantly changing new content is why your Ecademy networking profile will virtually always rank higher in Google than a corresponding profile on LinkedIn. As a result, Ecademy is a fantastic platform for creating a visible (there’s that concept again) Internet presence in comparison.

If you keep in mind some of the basic Internet Marketing concepts discussed above when you are creating new content and trying to raise the visibility of existing content, your efforts will yield a much more visible Internet presence.

Internet Marketing--Various Online Business Models

There are many different methods of making an online income. In reality, they are all very similar to the business models you see in the offline world. You can sell goods and services.

Do you see a common theme in all of these models? That’s right---to have a viable business, you have to literally provide some kind of a good or service that adds value to someone or something, either online or offline.

I think that when people think about going into business offline, they look for a need in their community and try to fill it. Online, they tend to think, OK, what can I do to make a lot of money? There is a huge difference between the two. Online, I think people really believe that if they put up a web site and sell something, the money will just come in. It is simply not an accurate thought, but I think that just about everybody has thought it at one time or another.

So to create an income online, you must meet a need, just like you would in the offline world. You meet that need by producing, developing, distributing, or brokering a product or service. That is just about it. You will never earn long-term viable income from schemes and scams, no more than a bank robber will earn a long-term viable income robbing banks.

Here are some of the basic business models you can find on the web:

1) Production model. This is a company that produces value by transforming one good into another for online consumption. An offline equivalent would be a shoemaker or a gold mining firm. The online equivalent might be the development of new software or search technology, or the development of online technology that aids in the execution of some of the other online business models.

2) Merchant model. This is a company that specializes in the sales and organizes the delivery of goods and services to an online market. This can be compared to the offline equivalent of a merchant. Some examples online are bookstores, food stores, catalog web sites and other goods and services sales organizations.

3) Advertising model. This is a company that specializes in providing the service of advertising or promotion to other online firms, for example, those firms that operate using the production or merchant model. This model charges these companies a fee to advertise the goods and services provided by the other online business models.

4) Affiliate model. This is a model that resembles the advertising model, but is different in that it focuses on recruiting many individual companies or individuals to do the advertising in a systematic and piecemeal way. Whereas in the advertising model, the advertiser is paid based on the amount of advertising distributed, the affiliate model pays the affiliate marketer when a sale or step in a sales process is completed. This step may be an online visit, a request for more information, or the actual sale itself.

5) Brokerage model. This model is one that compensates the broker for bringing together buyer and seller, usually in the form of a personal, one-on-one introduction. An example of this might be an online auction or a processor of online payments.

6) Information model. The information business model is one in which the company provides information to a specific field or niche market. This information would typically instruct another company or individual on an easier or more efficient method of performing a task, or actually teach the task or the implementation of the task.

7) Subscription model. This is an overlay model, one which is generally incorporated into one of the other models. This model would provide a good or service over a protracted period of time, and provide a guaranteed and generally consistent level of that good or service for a period of time, for example over the course of several months. Two products that fit into this subscription model might be that of online monthly video rentals or services like food or medicines which are delivered on a regular basis by commitment.

8) Utility model. This model operates in much the same way as an offline utility might operate, offering a product that has, through its use, become a necessity and is often tightly controlled. An example of an online utility model would be that of internet access or telephone service via an online network.

9) Community model. This is a business model that focuses on bringing together individuals or companies of similar interest for the purpose of developing relationships and sharing information. Two examples of the community web phenomenon are the recently created Myspace and the older online forum.

When deciding to go into business online, it is important to determine which of these business models most interest you. To which of these models are you best suited? In which of these models are you most likely to be considered an expert, or in which would you have the willingness to become an expert?

Microsoft Certification: Farewell To The MCSE

Microsoft is in the middle of a major push to overhaul its certification program. Last year, they announced the new Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA) certification, which is not a written exam but rather a practical exam that will be graded by a board of examiners. Just applying for the certification will require 10 years' experience in IT as well as three years of practical experience as a network architect.

For those of us not quite ready for that, Microsoft has announced that it's also going to revise other certifications. The MCSE that we've all come to know and love is going to be a thing of the past. In its place will be a series of specialization exams and IP Professional certification tracks.

If you're currently an MCSE or working it, don't worry, you have plenty of time to adapt to the new tracks. Microsoft's official word is that the new certification structure will be implemented when the next Windows server/client version is released. For those holding MCDBAs, your current certification will remain valid and you'll have a chance to upgrade to the new certification with SQL Server 2005.

Those of us who have been on the certification track for a while remember the outcry when Microsoft planned to phase out the much-maligned NT 4.0 certification in the move to Windows 2000. There was quite an outcry from many certified individuals who felt MS was being unreasonable in their timetable and planned lack of support for the 4.0 certification. Whether you agree with Microsoft's planned changes, I urge you to visit Microsoft's certification site regularly to keep up with these changes.

Whether you choose to pursue any of these new tracks is your decision, but you owe it to yourself and your career to know about the new tracks. Change is inevitable in IT and the IT certification world, and you must be aware of these changes!
