The Web 2.0 Puppet Master – The Man Behind The Scenes

Web 2.0 broadly refers to changing trends in web development and web design. In detail it basically refers to the newer group of web based communities as well as services such as blogs, social networking sites, wikis and other such services which work towards enabling collaboration, creativity and sharing among the users.

One of the main features of Web 2.0 is participation, cooperation as well as moderation by using web based applications. These were ideas that existed earlier in the form of applications such as online forums, online multiplayer games, dating sites and content management systems such as Wikis and Joomla. Features which enable the user to leave a message, for e.g., a comment given in a blog are the factors which make the communication a two-way path. This makes these applications rise above the status of a 1.0 application and possess the basic requirements of a 2.0 application.

Reasons For A Webmaster To Adopt Web 2.0

The basic outlook of social networkers is to widen their horizons by growing their network of online associates. The webmaster also desires to nurture and maintain a group of people or members who will by their own efforts help in sustaining the “energy” of the website. This could in turn assure the prolonged existence of the website as well as the interest and agenda promoted by the site. The total database of users of the website can also thus be expanded by adopting Web 2.0.

The Webmaster As A Moderator

As the database of users expands, the role of the webmaster gradually changes into that of a hands-off co-coordinator. The webmaster of Web 2.0 becomes more of a moderator whose main job is to maintain order in the website and carry out general maintenance of the site. The webmaster however needs to take care that he does not restrict the expansion of the site. The ideal method of ensuring growth and “liveliness” of the site would be to promote participants or members of the site to moderators. In this way, the webmaster of Web 2.0 takes on the role of a silent puppet master who operates behind the scenes alone.

How To Be A Successful Webmaster

Once the Web 2.0 has been established, the webmaster needs to find newer ways to avoid competition. Although different sites keep cropping up regularly, there are always variations between them and hence each site can enjoy their regular share of traffic. Targeting a niche audience by concentrating social networking on specific topics alone would be a better way to build up the energy within the site. For example, you could always devote a site to exchanging Indian recipes or Ferrari car accessories or any such area which attracts a specific type of people who are also interested in the betterment of the site.
