Quite simply, if your site comes up in the first ten results of a search, your chances of being viewed are increased dramatically. The idea here is simple. When someone types in a keyword related to my website, I want my site to come up before all others. Yes, the idea is simple but making this happen can be quite difficult. ?

In this tutorial you will find a concise distillation of the best techniques available and some good old-fashioned common sense. You need to realize in the beginning that there is no 100% solution here. You will never be able to come up first on every search engine all the time. All you can do is use the techniques that work from the outset and then modify as you discover what works.

Before we begin, here are some useful definitions that will help you understand this discussion and your internet experience better:

Search Engine A site that indexes World Wide Web pages based on content. Each engine works differently. They may base the results of their searches on Meta Tags, page content, page title, or a combination of these. The search engines get their content from spider (see below) programs. Some popular search engines are Alta Vista, Excite, and Lycos. (SearchHound is the newest and coolest of all. It allows you to search 8 engines at once- including its own superb index). Contrast this with a "Directory". Directory A site that categorizes the World Wide Web based on input submitted by someone.

What Exactly Is Spam?

As much as we all would like the search engines to give us clear guidelines on what does and does not constitute spam, we have to accept that it is an unrealistic expectation. Whenever a search engine presents a clear-cut spam guideline, unethical search engine marketers try to implement exceptions to the guideline. Then the search engines must update the guideline to include the new exceptions to the guideline, and so on, and so on. It's a never-ending process. Thus, the search engines present general rather than specific guidelines as to what constitutes spam.
Search engine spam is more about how and to what extent a marketing technique is used rather than if a technique is used. Thus, the search engine Spam Police do not automatically penalize a site for using a design technique if that design technique is used in an appropriate manner. For example, a site that uses invisible DHTML layers for drop-down menus, such as the Position Technologies site are not penalized because the invisible layers serve a navigation purpose. However, if a design or writing technique is used to deliberately trick a search engine into offering inappropriate, irrelevant, redundant, or poor-quality search results, a site can be penalized for spamming.
To determine whether a search engine marketing strategy is spam, ask yourself the following questions:
· Does your web site's actual content benefit your target audience and end users?
· Would you perform a search engine marketing strategy if the search engines did not exist?
· Are you building pages primarily for search engine positioning?
If you answered "yes" to the first and second questions and "no" to the third question, then in all likelihood, the search engine Spam Police will not consider the use of your design or writing strategies to be spam.
Conclusion
Utilizing spam techniques does not guarantee that your web pages get top search engine positions. Even if spam techniques work, the search engine positions are short-lived. After the search engines or competitors discover the spam, the site(s) utilizing spam are either penalized or permanently banned from the search engines. Then the spammers have to build another web site, another set of web pages, and begin the whole search engine marketing process all over again. This cat-and-mouse game can become very time consuming and expensive.Web pages with quality content and an acceptable search engine– friendly design consistently perform better on the search engines than spam pages. Because the pages contain quality content and the search engines have access to that quality content, there is no cat-and-mouse game. Sites that are optimized from the very beginning of the design and redesign process need little tweaking after the foundation is in place. Building a site for your target audience and following search engine best practices is one of the most cost-effective components of a search engine marketing campaign.

Some owners of content sites are earning four and even five-figure incomes per month selling "nothing." They're doing this by selling their targeted traffic to other websites through Google's AdSense program. 20 Quick Ways to Increase Your Alexa Rank

Most of the tips were gleaned from several fellow bloggers and webmasters who’ve experimented with Alexa.

1. Install the Alexa toolbar or Firefox’s SearchStatus extension and set your blog as your homepage. This is the most basic step
2. Put up an Alexa rank widget on your website. I did this a few days ago and receive a fair amount of clicks every day.
3. Encourage others to use the Alexa toolbar. This includes friends, fellow webmasters as well as site visitors/blog readers.
4. Work in an Office? Get the Alexa toolbar or SS Firefox extension installed on all computers and set your website as the homepage for all browsers.
5. Get friends to review and rate your Alexa website profile. Not entirely sure of its impact on rankings but it might help in some way.
6. Write or Blog about Alexa. Webmaster and bloggers love to hear about ways to increase their Alexa rank. They’ll link to you or visit your blog, which helps with your traffic rank.
7. Flaunt your URL in webmaster forums. Webmasters usually have the toolbar installed. I like doing this for a few reasons. You’ll get webmasters to visit your website and get some feedback in return. It’s also a good way to give back to the community.
8. Write content that is related to webmasters. This can fall in the category of domaining and SEO, two fields in which most webmasters will have the Alexa toolbar installed. Promote your content on social networking websites and webmaster forums.
9. Use Alexa redirects on your website URL. Try this: http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?www.doshdosh.com . Replace doshdosh.com with the URL for your website. Leave this redirected URL in blog comments as well as forum signatures. This redirect will count a unique IP address once a day so clicking it multiple times won’t help.
10. Post in Asian social networking websites or forums. Some have suggested that Asian (Korean or Hong Kong) web users are big Alexa toolbar fans.
11. Create a webmaster tools section on your website. This is a magnet for webmasters who will often visit your website to use the tools. Aaron Wall’s webpage on SEOTools is a very good example.
12. Get Dugg or Stumbled. This usually brings massive numbers of visitors to your website and the sheer amount will have a positive impact on your Alexa Rank. Of course, you’ll have to develop link worthy material.
13. Use PayperClick Campaigns. Buying advertisements on search engines such as Google or Exact Seek will help bring in Traffic. Doubly useful when your ad is about webmaster/tech related products/content.
14. Create an Alexa category on your blog and use it to include any articles or news about Alexa. This acts as a resource for webmasters while helping you rank in the search engines.
15. Optimize your popular posts. Got a popular post that consistently receives traffic from the search engines? Include a widget at the bottom of the post, call for Alexa signups or use Alexa redirection on your internal URLs.
16. Buy banners and links for traffic from webmaster forums and websites. A prominent and well displayed ad will drive lots of webmaster traffic to your website, which can significantly boost your rank.
17. Hire forum posters to pimp your website. Either buy signatures in webmaster forums or get respected users to pimp specific articles or material in your website on a regular basis.
18. Pay Cybercafe owners to install the Alexa toolbar and set your website as the homepage for all their computers.
19. Use MySpace . This is a little shady so I don’t recommended it unless you’re really interested in artificially inflating your Alexa Rank. Use visually attractive (wierd/sexy/funny) pictures or banners and link them to your redirected Alexa URL. You’ll get a lot of clicks but it doesn’t mean people are visiting your website.
20. Try Alexa auto-surfs. Do they work? Maybe for brand new sites. I think they are most suitable for new websites with a terrible Alexa rank. There might also be problems when you try to use auto surfs alongside contextual ads like Adsense.

What is PSA and Why am I getting it ?

What is PSA ?
PSAs or Public Service Ads are non-profit organization ads that are served to pages when targeted ads are unavailable, or when Google is unable to gather content from the page. Publishers do NOT receive earnings for clicks made on PSAs.
Why am I getting PSAs ?
There can be many reasons why a website may display less targeted ads or public service ads. Below is a list of the most common issues.
· Google's system has not yet crawled all the pages of your website. - The crawler needs more time. If Google has not previously crawled your site, it may take up to 48 hours or more to gather the content of that page. In the meantime, the ads you see may be public service ads or ads that are only slightly relevant. The relevance will increase over time.Note: Cawler indexes by URL and therefore considers http://site.com and http://www.site.com different URLs. Because it will visit these URLs separately, you may notice ads appear differently on these pages.- The crawler can't reach your site. If the crawler isn't able to access your page, you will see an error message on the Site Diagnostics page of your account. For more details on these errors and how to resolve them, please go here: Site Diagnostics entry.
· Your page may contain sensitive content for which relevant paying ads will not be displayed. Google system has certain filters in place to protect the advertisers from advertising on pages that could be construed as potentially negative, non-family safe or even offensive. Although the nature of your content may not fit into any of these categories, at times the emphasis of some sensitive subject matters on a page can flag the servers to deliver public service ads to a page.
Your account may be disapproved or awaiting review.To determine the status of your application, please try to log in at www.google.com/adsense using the email address and password you submitted with your application.

If you see a message stating: Account Not Active: An AdSense account does not exist for this login, as it is associated with an unapproved application., search your email to find the disapproval or account closure message for more information. If you've applied to AdSense through another website, such as Blogger, you may be displaying ads even though your application is unreviewed or has been disapproved. If you see a message stating Account Not Active: An AdSense account does not exist for this login, as your application is currently in review., please wait 2-3 days because your application is under review. If you see another message or form, search your email to find the disapproval message for more information.
If you successfully log into your account, this reason doesn't apply to you.
· Your site has restricted access using a robots.txt exclusion. If your site is using a robots.txt file, the AdSense crawler may be blocked from crawling your webpages. Therefore, your site can't get the most relevant ads based on the content of your website. On pages the crawler unable to crawl or understand the content of a page, public service ads may be displayed, for which you will not receive any earnings.For more information on the robots protocol, please visit http://www.robotstxt.org.
· Your website is using session IDs in the URL. If your webpages use session IDs, you may not receive targeted ads on those pages. Since this session ID - and therefore the URL - changes every time a different user views a page, the URL will not be in the index and will be queued to be crawled. Once the URL is crawled, however, the session will most likely have expired. This means that pages seen by the users are never in the index. You will need to remove the session IDs in order to display targeted ads.
· Your website is using frames. Google AdSense crawlers are unable to match ads to your webpage content when the AdSense ad code is placed in a frame separate from the primary content of your website. It is important to place the ad code in the same frame as the content of your webpages in order to serve ads targeted to your webpage content.
· Your ad unit is set to display image ads only. Image ad inventory for your content may be limited at this time; PSAs will be displayed in that unit when there are no relevant image ads available. To avoid showing PSA's, please update your preferences to show both text and image ads or implementing an alternate ad.
· Your webpage may not contain enough content. There may not be enough information on your site for Adsense crawlers to determine the content of your pages. Therefore, it is a bit difficulty to identify relevant ads to show on your pages. Please note that the crawlers are unable to derive meaning from:* audio and video files (.wma, .mpeg, .mov)* mp3 files (.mp3)* images (.jpeg, .bmp)* Macromedia Flash movies* Java AppletsIn such cases, you need to include more content other than the above files on your website to assist the crawlers in gathering information about your site to display relevant ads.
· The AdSense ad code was placed within an IFRAME.
· Your webpages are behind a login. At this time, pages that require a login can not be easily visited by Adsense crawlers. Additionally, since these types of pages are not easily visited for approval and it is difficult for AdSense specialists to verify that pages behind a log in follow Google AdSense policies.
· There are too many URLs added to your account filter list. At times, if you add too many URLs to your filter list, there might be no longer other ads available to target to your content. As a result, you may begin seeing less relevant or public service ads on your webpages.
· Your site content is primarily in an unsupported language.If the AdSense code is placed on pages with content primarily in an unsupported language, public service ads or ads in another language will appeared. You can refer to program policies, publishers may not display ads on pages with content primarily in an unsupported language, so please remove the ad code from these pages until we're able to support your language.
· Your ad code has been modifiedIf the AdSense code has been manually modified, such as to change the ad unit width or height or the publisher ID. Please select the desired ad format on the AdSense Setup tab of your account and then paste the generated ad code, unedited, onto your pages. Keep in mind that modifications to your code are not permitted by our program policies.

What Does it Take to Make Money Online?

What a loaded question! Let’s narrow that down a bit and take it from the perspective of someone who wants to work from home and make money online in a home business. That will make it an easier question to answer. Let’s assume you’ve never had a website, don’t know how to get a merchant account, don’t know html, and are pretty much stuck with being an expert on sending and receiving email.
What’s there for you to do online to make money?
Lots, in fact! These days are not at all like a couple of years ago or even six months ago. If I only had all the opportunities to make money online when I started marketing! Here is a list of things you can do with just a website and a hosting account today: Sell affiliate products (products like reports, ebooks, hard goods of every conceivable make, model, size, shape and function, and much, much more). Sell services (do you know how big a business being a Virtual Assistant is these days? It’s quite amazing what you can do for people without ever meeting them face-to-face, anywhere in the world!) Online auctions (Ebay has made thousands and thousands of people full-time incomes from auctioning collectibles, antiques, and even brand new equipment and gadgets of all imaginable types. You name it, it has been sold on Ebay!)
Membership sites: Know of any groups of people that would love to get insider information on virtually any topic? You could make money online with a membership site! The list is a long one and one I am not prepared to detail here. You have found your way onto the net and if you have been surfing for very long at all you know it is a gigantic super shopping mall. Realistic when selling on eBay

As some of you know, I spent many years buying and selling both on and offline and several of my products are based upon my own experience in this area. I know that the vast majority of my customers and subscribers have an interest in trading whether it be on eBay or at the local market but more and more I am seeing people with completely unrealistic expectations of what they will be able to do. Most commonly these unrealistic expectations are in respect of how much it actually costs to purchase specific products and what they can then be sold on for.
I regularly get emails from people who want to know where they can purchase products such as mobile (cell) phones, new release DVDs, Playstation games and similar at, say, a 50% discount to resell on eBay. The fact is that such a thing is not available - it is a simple case of supply and demand and competition.Take DVDs for example, most people think that these are excellent products to resell on eBay because they are very popular, not particularly expensive and easy to package and ship. Unfortunately, they could not be more wrong.
The DVD market is one of the most competitive that there is - take a look for yourself and see how many auctions there are on eBay for DVDs at any one time. I have just looked and counted almost 300,000! At any one time there will only be a certain number of buyers wanting to purchase a particular DVD and if you take into account the numerous different places there are that each buyer could purchase from, it is likely that in general, there will be more copies of an individual DVD available than there are buyers to purchase them. This situation causes prices to fall.
The other factor that forces prices down is the fact that one DVD is the same as another. By this I mean that from a buyers point of view, there is no difference to a new DVD purchased on eBay to one which is purchased from their local DVD store. Often the only way to differentiate is on price and of course, the only way to make the price more attractive to a buyer is to lower it.The above reasons help to explain why the wholesale discount on a new release DVD is just £1 or £2 at most ($2 or $3 roughly in the US).
When you take into account the fact that the large retail chains can purchase thousands of DVDs at a time and receive a bigger discount than individual traders, you soon see why it is very difficult for a small business to compete in such a competitive industry. You simply cannot purchase new release DVDs at 50% discount and even if you could, it wouldn't be long before prices were forced down as there is always someone willing to sell a little bit cheaper than the next man.It isn't just DVDs that fall into this category. Take mobile (cell) phones. Here in the UK you can walk down just about any high street and get the latest phones either free or for a minimal token payment.
The stores are relying on making their money from the line rental contract that you will have to sign in order to get the phone. Of course, the actual cost of the phone is not free - most new mobiles are actually worth £200 or £300 which means that if you want to buy a batch of phones at wholesale, you are going to be looking at a pretty high unit cost. As with most electrical products, the market is competitive and prices have been forced down which means that the difference between your wholesale buying price and your retail selling price is minimal.
There are numerous products that suffer from the same market conditions as DVDs and phones and new/small traders really should avoid trying to sell such items at all costs because it will usually be frustrating and ultimately not financially rewarding. When trying to decide what products to sell, you need to be thinking about the type of market that a particular product is sold in. If there are already numerous sellers and many large companies selling at considerable discounts this is far from ideal. The exception to the rule is if you are able to add value in some way to make your 'offering' more unique.
The end of the day, it is all about research, being realistic and having an understanding of the market that you want to operate in. Whilst it would be great to be able to buy and sell new release DVDs (or whatever) all day long, doubling your money every time, I am afraid that this is just not going to happen.

Google to Compete with PayPal?

PayPal is secure in its domination over the electronic payment industry, at least for now. Following reports that Google planned to launch a new Internet payment service (nicknamed Google Wallet), Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, denied that Google would be directly competing with PayPal. He did, however, acknowledge that Google has plans for some type of electronic payment service. Without revealing any details, Schmidt emphasized that the Google payment service will not offer the same sort of “person to person, store-valued payments system” as PayPal provides.
The Internet commerce industry was rampant with rumours of the new Google service following an e-commerce conference hosted by securities firm Piper Jaffray. Speculation that Google Wallet would encroach on PayPal territory was reinforced by the appearance of a June 20th article in the Wall Street Journal which stated that Google was planning an online payment service to compete with PayPal.
PayPal is a unit of eBay and generates almost 25% of total eBay revenue. It is used by consumers for making a wide variety of Internet purchases. It allows purchasers to use their credit cards without divulging their credit card numbers to merchants. PayPal takes a percentage of each transaction and had revenues of $233.1 million in the first quarter of this year.
Most of Google’s revenue comes from online advertising and this expansion into online payments was seen by many in the industry as yet another example of the rivalry between the two companies. Google is a giant in Internet commerce with revenues of $3.2 billion last year. A payment service that competed directly with PayPal would be a serious blow to both PayPal and eBay.
Google maintained silence about the rumours until Schmidt’s comments last Tuesday. Without elaborating, he stated that Google’s payment service would be an extension of its existing advertising programs.
